Measuring for Fulton Coupler Hinge Kit # FHDPB330301 and Maximum Hinge Distance Allowed from Tongue
Question:
I was wondering what the max distance you would mount the hinge from the tongue of the boat? I would like to know how to measure for a coupler kit for my boat, do I just measure OD? I just want to make sure im ordering the correct product. Thank you

You will want to measure the size of your trailer tongue to determine what size hinged coupler kit is needed. The hinged coupler kits fit the 2 x 3 inch, 3 x 3 inch, 3 x 4 inch, and 3 x 5 inch tongue size. You will also want to make sure when installing the hinged coupler kit that the distance you put the hinge at on the trailer tongue will still allow you to maintain the correct weight capacity and tongue weight for your boat and trailer.
The Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit, part # FHDPB330301, will fit a 3 x 3 inch tongue and the maximum distance (pivot length) you can will want to mount the hinge at on the tongue is 34 inches. This would create a 34 inch foldaway tongue on your boat trailer. At that distance the gross trailer weight capacity it could handle would be reduced to 3,500 lbs and the tongue weight would be 350 lbs. It can be mounted up to 24 inches and still maintain the 5,000-lb gross trailer weight capacity and 500-lb tongue weight capacity.
The hinged coupler kit could be installed at a longer length but it would reduce the weight capacity so dramatically that it would be not be sufficient enough to carry your boat and trailer.
For the best and safest ride, you would want to install the Fulton coupler hinge kit so that the coupler ends up being in about the same position as the old one was to retain the same tongue weight and lessen the chance of failure.
If you have any more questions regarding the Fulton hinged coupler kit please let me know and I would be glad to help.
