Connecting a Vehicle with a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a Trailer with a 6-Way
Question:
Bought a trailer with a 6 pole. Plugged into adapter cause truck is 7 pole. I also have a Tekonsha P3 brake controller. 1st time it read output shorted no brakes and brakes locked on the trailer. Switched the wires in the adapter like I read on here and now it reads no trailer. I bought a 7 pole connector for the trailer and will try that next

Replacing the 7-way connector on the trailer is the best route. This way you'll know exactly how it's wired.
I recommend testing each wire by connecting it to a 12 volt battery as you're making the connections.
It also may be easier to make the connections using a junction box and out # HS381-9000 kit.
