Orientation of the Pin on the Convert-A-Ball Interchangeable Ball Set 901B
Question:
The installation instructions that come with the 901B are sketchy. It states to torque to 180 lbs.. I assume 180 ft-#s is correct ?. The installation instructions say to align the pin axis with the bumper, so presumably that means pin axis is perpendicular to the direction of travel. Is that correct ?. I would think youd want the pin oriented so that the repeated loading from bumps and starting and stopping would be transferred directly from ball to the substantial vertical shaft, so those banging loads dont go through the pin, and the pin just acts to keep the ball from coming off. If that banging is in the direction of travel, then I think youd want the pin axis in the direction of travel ?. If the banging is largely side-to-side then I could see that the pin axis perpendicular to the direction of travel would be appropriate ??. Thoughts ?. Thanks for your help.

The torque figure is 180 ft lbs. Sorry for the confusion there.
As far as the pin orientation. Convert a ball tested that and determined that having it perpendicular was better. Having it that direction prevents the pin from getting damaged from front to back movement. Having it that way prevents the ball from not being able to change sizes when needed.
