Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Ford Focus

Question:

Are there any 2inch receiver mounts available for a 2017 Ford Focus Hatchback SE? I am reading that 1-1/4inch is the usual size but Im trying to use my existing 2inch bike mount and would like to avoid using an adapter that extends the rack farther from the bumper. Thanks!

All of the available trailer hitches for your 2017 Ford Focus Hatchback SE are Class I hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. This is most likely because the vehicle itself simply does not have the capacity that a higher class trailer hitch (and larger receiver opening) will provide.

For your vehicle, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11158. This is custom fit for your Ford Focus and I have attached the installation details for you to check out. I recommend the Curt over the Draw-Tite model that is also confirmed to fit your Focus because it does not include a built-in stopper that prevents certain bike racks from fitting properly. Per Curt warranty, you will just need to use stabilizing straps like # 18050 with bike racks and cargo carriers.

As you mentioned in your question, the only way to use your existing 2 inch bike rack with a trailer hitch on your vehicle is going to be with an adapter like the Brophy # HTAD. Keep in mind that when using this or any similar adapter, the tongue weight capacity of the hitch will be reduced by 50%. This means that the 200 pound tongue weight capacity on the above mentioned Curt hitch will be reduced to 100 pounds when using the adapter. As long as you stay under the reduced weight capacity, this adapter is perfectly safe to use. Also note that the most bikes you can load onto a Class I hitch bike rack is 2.

I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of bike racks that are designed for Class I trailer hitches that you may want to look through.
