How to Determine the Bolt Pattern of a Trailer Wheel

Question:

I bought a hitch, etc from you and the service, follow up and shipping was great. I finally got the trailer to go with the hitch now I need a spare for the trailer. The wheel is a 15 X 5J on a Dexter axle. It measures roughly 3 inches between lug bolts but everything I see is 5 on 5 or 5 on 5.5 or 5 on 4.5... Any chance you could point me in the right direction?

I am glad to hear that we have been able to help you. I can certainly help you with finding the correct wheel and tire combo. There are actually a couple of ways you can measure for the bolt patter of a trailer wheel. I have provided a link to our FAQ article that explains both methods. You can also find this information if you scroll down on the product page for Trailer Wheel # AM20422.

Basically, You can use the number of lugs and the bolt circle. If there is an EVEN number of lugs, measure center-to-center on lugs directly across from each other. So with 6 holes that are 5-1/2 inches apart would have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

If there is an ODD number of lugs, measure from the center of one lug to a point halfway between the two lugs directly opposite on the bolt circle. With an odd number of lugs, there is not a lug directly opposite any hole, so finding the circle diameter can be challenging.

For the other method, use the distance between the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole adjacent to it and check that against the information below. The measurement have to be accurate.

If the distance is:
2-5/8 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2
2-3/4 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4
3 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5
3-1/4 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2
