Recommendation to Fix Loud Banging From Trailer When Using Mopar 25K 5th Wheel Hitch on Ram 3500

Question:

I have a mopar 25k 5th wheel on my Ram 3500. I have a Kaufman ez4 trailer attached. Everytime Im stopping or taking off from a stop it pulls and you hear a very loud bang clunk noise. Any reason behind why it would make a loud noise? Its gresed and we keep it greased regularly.

From your description it sounds like you are experiencing chucking and jarring. This is the result of the Mopar 25K 5th wheel hitch not having a snug fit around the king pin. When you take off or slow down there is a little movement in the jaws of the 5th wheel hitch.

We have 2 of our 5th wheel hitch options that are excellent at combating chucking and jarring.

The Reese Select Plus Series uses a single jaw design. This will provide full 360-degree contact between the jaw and the king pin. What I recommend using is the 20K # RP30081 if your Ram has an 8 ft bed or the 20K Slider # RP30084 if your Ram has the 6 ft bed. For these to be compatible with the factory puck system in your Ram 3500 you will need the Adapter # RP30154.

The other option that we have comes from Demco and is called the Hijacker. This 5th wheel hitch uses a single jaw that provides 360-degree contact and is reinforced by a 3/4 inch locking steel bar for peace of mind. For an 8 ft bed you will want to use the 21K # DM6076P-21K option, but if you have a 6 ft bed you will want to go with the 21K with the Autoslide feature # DM8550035. For either of these to fit the puck system in your 3500 you will need the Adapter # DM6099 as well.

Please keep in mind that if you have a 6 ft bed and your Kaufman trailer has a Revolution or Sidewinder pin box that you will want to go with the 8 ft options since you do not want to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch (unless it stays in the locked position) with either of those pin boxes. The Custom Wedge # SWW-01 will need to be used for a secure fit.

I have attached some review videos of each of the 5th wheel hitches for you to check out as well.
