Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 2017 Ford Escape
Question:
looking at a hitch and possibly weight distribution and sway control for a 2017 Ford Escape wuth 2.0L Ecoboost towing a Lance 1475 Travel trailer Dry weight 2495 lbs and hitch weight 240 lbs. Seems the round hitch looks good but wonder about weight distribution and sway prevention. The systems themselves look very heavy when keeping the weight down is also a goal. Maybe you could help explain the benefits and which unit would be best and why. thx

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.
240 lbs of tongue weight would work well with the Reese Steadi-Flex part # 66557 which has a tongue weight range of up to 400 lbs. It also has a friction sway control system built into the head of it. The weight of the systems do not count as tongue weight. I've asked Reese about this before and they state that the system basically becomes a part of the trailer hitch so it does not count as additional tongue weight.
For a 2 inch ball you would want the part # 63845 or for a 2-5/16 inch ball part # 63847.
