Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2017 Honda Pilot
Question:
What is the best route to install a trailer hitch and wiring with electric brakes for a 2017 Honda pilot AWD?

Starting with the trailer hitch, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98840 for your 2017 Honda Pilot. This hitch is custom-fit for your vehicle and will provide a slightly better ground clearance measurement than the compatible Curt alternative. This has a 900-pound tongue weight and 6,000-pound towing weight capacity. Because the hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle frame, no drilling is required during installation. This hitch will fit with the mini and full-size spare, as long as the full-size spare is the 18 inch model.
I have attached an installation video on the 2017 Honda Pilot for you to check out.
If your Honda Pilot has the tow package, I recommend installing the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118286. This will quickly and easily install the required 7-way connector to pair with your trailer by plugging into the OEM tow package wiring harness.
If you do not have the tow package, you will just need to first install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118760. The T-One connector will plug into existing wiring behind the trim panel in the cargo area on the driver side and under the vehicle on the driver side. This will provide a 4-way flat connector. You will then need to install the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This kit will include everything needed to plug into the 4-way connector and install a 7-way and electric brake controller. I have attached an article that details the installation steps for this kit that you may find helpful.
For a brake controller to control the electric brakes on your trailer, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a great proportional brake controller that will activate your trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Honda Pilot. The controller features an easy-to-read digital display and continuous diagnostics to alert you to any potential issues.
For a ball mount, I recommend looking at the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This includes 2 ball mounts with different rise and drops and the two most common sized hitch balls. I have attached an article that will help you determine the rise or drop needed to tow your trailer level if the included ball mounts in the kit are not sufficient.
I have also included video demonstrations on the products mentioned as well as a couple articles on towing a trailer for you to check out.
