Creating Clearance Between Frame and Exhaust to Install Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2004 Honda CR-V
Question:
The factory clearance between top of muffler to frame on vehicle is less than 9/16 inch measured with hexnut on one of the flats. The hardware provided protrudes through the frame more than 1 inch. I see 3 options for this clearance issue. 1. cut the bolt to length by removing 5 threads prior to feeding into the aft frame hole location. 2. Use a ballpeen hammer to dent in a golfball sized divet in the top of the muffler directly below the aft frame hole. 3. Manufacturer provide 2 replacement rubber hangars that would the muffler supported location. Suggestion number 3 would provide the needed support, prevent the threaded bolt end from quickly wearing a hole in the muffler, and remedy a quality escape.

There can be quite a lot of variances on the location of an exhaust system on a vehicle when leaving the factory and sometimes it can get in the way when trying to install an aftermarket trailer hitch receiver, like the Draw-Tite # 75690 on your 2004 Honda CR-V.
I've linked a help article on different ways to solve the issue. The most common method we use is to bend the hanger to give you more clearance. As long as the exhaust isn't rattling against any components this is a fairly easy and effective solution.
