Tire Inflation In Regards To Speed And Heat

Question:

Hello, My question about trailers tires ST235/85R16. The cold inflation pressure supposes to be 80 PSI. In the course of driving, the temperature and tire pressure usually increase by approximately 10-15. My question is, what is the maximum pressure that the existing tires can keep for a long trip at a speed of no more than 50-55 miles per hour? Thank you!

Your tires with a max psi of 80 are designed to be filled cold as you stated. They will heat up with friction from the road as well as the heat of the day, but they are not restricted to distance. The max speed is 65 mph unless otherwise stated with a speed rating of L (75 mph), M (81 mph) or J (62 mph). Because you have radial tires, they are better at dissipating heat so they will function better under the driving conditions you mentioned. Many people will put up to 8 hours a day at 65 mph to get to a destination.

If you are concerned about over-inflation, you can watch the center tread of your tires as it will wear more in the center. Under-inflated tires will wear on the outside edges and is far more likely to cause a blow out.
