What Fifth Wheel Hitch Is Needed For A 2006 Nissan Titan Crew Cab With A 5-1/2 Foot Bed
Question:
Is your suggestions right for this vehicle? I have been told that I need a slider hitch because it has a short bed. If your stuff works I would rather put it in my truck. My truck is a Nissan Titan 2006 crew cab with 5.5 bed.

On your 2006 Nissan Titan Crew Cab with a 5-1/2 foot bed you will need to use a standard hitch with a Sidewinder. The Sidewinder will relocate the pivot point from where the king pin locks into the hitch 22 inches to the rear, to the point where the pin box attaches to the trailer. The Sidewinder is specific to the part number on your existing fifth wheel pin box, so you will need that part number to select the correct model Sidewinder. You will also need to choose a fifth wheel hitch whose capacity is equal to or greater than the fully loaded weight of your trailer.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on Sidewinders. This page will answer most of your questions on how a Sidewinder works and how to choose the correct Sidewinder for your vehicle. It will contain a list of pin box manufacturers with part numbers to help you choose the right Sidewinder for your fifth wheel.
On trucks that have a bed shorter than 6 feet you will need to use a Sidewinder. If you were to use a fifth wheel hitch with a slider in a truck with a bed that short, you would almost certainly damage the truck or trailer when making a turn. Even when fully slid to the rear, you still will not have enough clearance between the truck cab and the front of the trailer. You may also experience contact with the truck tail gate.
If you are looking for a 16,000 lbs. fifth wheel hitch for your 2006 Nissan Titan, I would recommend the Reese 16K 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part # RP30047, and the Reese Semi-Custom Base Rail and Installation Kit, part # RP30035-405. Then, you would need to choose the correct Sidewinder that would fit your fifth wheel.
If you want to send me the weight of your fifth wheel and the pin box part number I will be able to help you choose the correct Sidewinder for your application.
I am including links to the installation instructions on the Reese hitch and the installation kit.
