Installing a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on a 2006 Ford Expedition
Question:
I just purchased an 06 Expedition and want to add a 7 way. I have 2 trailers. One with electric brakes and one with no brakes and thought this would work but dont know how to wire it. The diagram for wiring adapter has a slot for back-up. Do I use this slot for my brakes?

On your 2006 Ford Expedition, there should already be a factory installed trailer connector. It will either be a 4-Way flat or a 7-Way blade. If your vehicle has a 4-Way flat, you will need to add Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole, # 37185. On this connector, you would plug your 4-Way into the corresponding plug on the adapter. The remaining wires would need to be hardwired. Take a look under your vehicle behind the driver side rear tire and the bumper for the trailer wiring. There will be more wires going in to the plug that leads to the rear than coming out.
Connect the blue wire on the adapter to the blue wire on the factory harness. Connect the black wire on the adapter to the orange wire on the harness. The white wire will need to be attached to the vehicle frame. The remaining wire can be attached to the reverse light circuit if the trailers have reverse lights. If not, you can just tape up this wire and stow it out of the way.
If the trailer with electric brakes does not have a 7-Way, it would be beneficial to add one so the use of additional wiring and adapter will not be needed. You can use # PK12706 to wire in the new plug. I have included a video showing this connector being installed.
Now, you would just need a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. Then the appropriate wiring harness that plugs into the controller and into a port on your Expedition is the # 3035-P. You can find the port under the dash and to the right of the steering wheel like in the video I have linked showing installation on a similar vehicle.
If you have a 7-Way, you will just need to add the brake controller.
