Recommended Replacement Brake Controller For 2016 Ram 1500
Question:
I have a 2016 Ram 1500 that I purchased a 3024-P harness to attache my Reese Brakeman controller up. It was suggested that I purchase this harness and cut the end off and wire it to my controller. I did this and everything tested great. I left on a trip with my travel trailer and after a couple miles the brakes quit working. I found I was not getting a signal from the brake pedal. I could engage the brakes with the slide lever. After the truck is shut off or the trailer unhooked for a while, the controller will work normally again for a few miles. The LED on the controller stops working with the brake pedal. With no trailer it works fine. Can I get some advice on troubleshooting or what might be wrong.

The problem you are having with the Brakeman brake controller is that the 2016 Ram does not send enough current for the brake controller and you are seeing it fail. This is common on 2013 and up Ram trucks when using older brake controllers.
The Brakeman was a time-delayed controller, but I recommend replacing it with a proportional controller like the Prodigy P2, part # 90885. A proportional controller applies the brakes on the trailer in direct proportion to the braking action in the towing vehicle.
The # 90885 is our most popular because it is easy to install and operate. If you had not removed the connector on the # 3024-P it would have been an easy install by just plugging in. As it is you can still use the # 3024-P to plug into the brake controller.
