Tips for Charging Battery on Trailer that Powers Winch

Question:

Im interested in installing an 8000# winch make and model TBD on my trailer. Load will be intermittent, low duty cycle, so I had planned to install a battery within the winch mount on the trailer, and keep battery charged thru 7-way RV plug already on truck and trailer. Unfortunately, Im not finding much in the way of current management circuitry, as Id like to not blow the fuse or cook the wiring on the truck when the winch load and battery charge dictates. Are there any battery management circuits or -out devices to allow this type of hook-up? My goal here is to not require modifications to the truck, as Id like to be able to substitute any truck with a standard 7-way RV plug and brake controller.

Charging a trailer battery with the 12 volt accessory circuit of a 7-way is a great way to put a maintenance charge on the battery but you really can't fully charge a dead battery using this method as the circuit just doesn't have the amperage for that.

You would need to use a NOCO Genius Battery Charger and Maintainer # 329-GENIUS5 to charge the battery when parked and then use the 7-way to keep it topped off.
