The Phoenix Faucets Shower Faucet # PF213321 has brass shanks, underbody, and valve. The bottom plate and lock nuts are plastic.

Understanding that the rest of the water valve is brass, is the D-spud plastic or BRASS? If plastic, it looks like the D-spud 3/8 stem that screws into the brass body would be susceptible to snapping or cracking if accidentally pushed hard enough, esp. while the shower hose is screwed onto it. Wouldnt brass be stronger and could be fashioned from a 3/8 brass pipe nipple with a 3/8 X 3/4 bushing?

The D-spud on this faucet is indeed made of a durable plastic. I haven't heard of this piece cracking (we have quite a few customer reviews on this unit that you can look through on the product page) but you could certainly replace it with a brass piece if you want. The brass outlet for the D-spud is 1/8 pipe thread.
