Husky Weight Distribution System for Travel Trailer with 775-lb Dry Hitch Weight

Question:

If my 2010 Coachman Catlina 28BHS has a tongue weight of 775 lbs, can I go with a 800-1200 lb hitch, or do I need to stay with a 600-800 lb hitch? Im looking at the Husky Centerline TS.

The key to selecting a weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) system like the Husky Centerline # HT32218 is knowing the total effective tongue weight (TW) of the set-up. This is the combination of the fully-loaded trailer's measured TW plus the weight of anything in the tow vehicle that sits behind the rear axle, such as a loaded cooler or generator. We offer a handy scale # e99044 for measuring trailer TW and other methods are outlined in the linked article.

The ideal is to have your total TW fall right in the middle of the system's operating range. This ensures you get the desired weight shift onto the vehicle's front axle without any weird handling side-effects from the trailer. The Husky system # HT32218 works over a TW range of 800- to 1200-lbs, making it ideal for a total TW of 1000-lbs.

The 775-lb figure for your trailer is its dry hitch weight. Once you add your supplies, fill your water and propane tanks and load your gear your TW will be higher, and certainly over the 800-lb starting point for this system. This Husky system is likely to be a good option based on your dry hitch weight.
