Why Do Larger Trailer Wheels and Tires have Higher Capacities

Question:

i have a travel trailer and it has 15 inch tires on it and junky china tires from the factory, i want to upgrade my tires but dont want to buy new wheels why does it seem that the stronger the trailer tire are the larger the rim wheel? also the G rated tires are all around 110 psi max not sure what the rating is on my current wheels is this an issue?

Expert Reply:

Larger wheels and tires for trailer generally have higher towing capacities as they have more material to spread out the weight and because the manufacturers know that the larger sizes are typically needed for larger trailers which weigh more so they make them with capacities high enough.

Higher psi ratings typically are fine with the rims but you will need to make sure the valve stem is rated for it as that is typically the weak point.

For a 15 inch wheel I really like the part # TR225LRE which has a higher Load Range E and has a speed rating of 81 mph instead of most trailer tires that are only rated for 65.
