B&W Hitch Compatibility With 5th Wheel Trailer For 5-1/2 Foot Bed On 2008 Toyota Tundra Crewmax
Question:
Greetings, I have a BandW Turnover Gooseneck hitch installed in the bed of my 2008 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 5.5 foot bed. It appears that the standard Companion has different configurations that allow you to set the kingpin 7 inches back from the ball . . . or essentially a 7 inch offset. Is that accurate and does that leave enough space between the truck cab and trailer to avoid issues? I think my alternative solution is a gooseneck adapter that would have an 8 or 9 inch offset. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I reached out to my contact at B&W and confirmed the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs, # BWRVK3500 does have the 7 inch offset from the ball to the kingpin you referenced. The Companion slider hitch, # BWRVK3400 which would be more ideal for a short bed truck is not able to work with your 2008 Toyota Tundra Crew Max with 5.5 foot bed. The Companion hitch will give you limited clearance between your truck cab and trailer so you will have to be extremely careful when turning.
The only converter that will give you 8 inches of clearance is the Ranch Hitch Universal 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter w/8" Offset for Short-Bed Trucks, # AM3139, which requires the Slide Hammer for Ranch Hitch 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter # AM3103 to install. I don't believe this is the best solution for your application, but it can work. You will need to check with your trailer manufacturer as many of these adapters will void your warranty on your trailer if used.
Your very best option to avoid any cab and trailer contact is unfortunately to remove your gooseneck hitch and install standard 5th wheel rails with a standard hitch and use a sidewinder king pin. This is the only system confirmed to work with a 5-1/2 foot bed without issue. My recommendation is to get the custom rail kit, # RP50084-58, and use it with a standard hitch like the # RP30928 with wedge kit # RP44FR to prevent the king pin from pivoting in the jaws of the hitch.
Then you will need to get a sidewinder king pin that will move your pivot point back. I've included an article on sidewinders, but I would need your pin box number to help you with that specific fit. I've linked the page for 5th wheel king pins that provide turning clearance for you.
