Transmission Cooler Recommendation and Install Instructions for a 1996 Chevy Express Van

Question:

Hi, I have a 96 Chevy Express conversion van with a 5.0 EFI Vortex engine. I want to install a transmission cooler cause I will be towing about 2K lbs trailer and motorcycle. Which cooler do u recommend and how do I install it? In line I know but which line is the return line bottom or top hose from the radiator. Im assuming the return line is the lower one?

I would recommend the largest cooler that will easily fit in front of the air conditioning condenser on your 1996 Chevy Express Van. In your case the Derale Class IV, Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, item # D13504, would be the one that I would go with, but you will need to measure to be sure there is room for it to install in front of the A/C condenser.

There is a simple way to determine which transmission line is the return line. Start the vehicle and let it run for a bit, then feel the two transmission lines, the cooler of the two lines will be the return line. You are correct that normally the lower line is the return but check to be sure. The cooler core itself will flow in either direction, either port can be used as the inlet or outlet port, and the cooler can be positioned in any orientation that fits well on your vehicle.

I have posted a photo to show the typical transmission cooler installation. For your vehicle you will also need the Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for GM, item # D13018, which will install in the radiator tank to allow you to connect the hose to the transmission cooler.

I have provided links to some information on transmission coolers for you to review and to a video installation that should help.
