According to the owner's manual for the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek you cannot use tire chains on the vehicle. The problem with is that chains are required by law in some areas. This is the Tire Chain Paradox or Reno's Law. The bottom line though is that neither a vehicle manufacturer nor dealership can make you break the law. If chains are required by law the law wins out over everything else.
What I recommend are chains or traction devices that require the least amount of clearance. If your vehicle has 225/55-17 tires then the chains that require the least clearance around the tires are # TH02230K44. They are on the expensive side but no part of them will be between the inner sidewall and the vehicle. Subaru most not know they exist otherwise they would recommend these specifically; I'm sure of it.
The other option is to use cables such as # PW1038 which require more clearance than the above chains. They are Class S rated which means they stick out less than 15mm from the tire.
Chains should go on the main drive wheels of the vehicle which on your XV Crosstrek should be the front wheels.
