Fixing Lights on a Utility Trailer  

Question:

Trying to fix a utility trailer lights. Straight 4 prong. I get both turn signals, and I get brake lights. However, I have no running lights. Why would this happen? Any suggestions?

The first thing to do is determine whether the problem is on the tow vehicle or the trailer. You can do this by using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, on the trailer connector and testing the pin for the running lights while the headlights are on. If you get current on that circuit, then the problem exists on the trailer. You will have to trace the running light circuit usually the brown wire from the connector back to the lamps, looking for pinched or broken wires, and loose or missing connections. If you do not get current on that pin with the headlights on, then the problem is on the vehicle. Check the brown wire on the harness and make sure it is connected to the appropriate wire for running lights on the vehicle.
