Stud Installation on Dexter Axle Trailer Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-1K
Question:
I just purchased the above trailer hub from you in fine shape with very prompt delivery. THANKS . My question is-are the 4 studs press fitted in the hub or are they tapped into the hub. I plan to remove them and replace with a much greater length stud for my project. If they are press fitted is it ok to use a little heat for easyier removal??. What is the actual stud and thread size? Thanks for your time and do Have a nice Christmas and new year

I contacted our representative at Axle Tek and he informed me that the studs on the Trailer Hub Assembly, part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K are Drive In Studs, so they are either pressed or hammered in.
This hub assembly will work with your 2000 lb Axles, 4 on 4 bolt pattern, with L44643 Bearings.
I informed him that you are planning to remove the studs and replace them with longer studs. He recommended Wheel Stud, part # 165995, which is about a 1/2 inch longer than the studs on part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K.
To remove the studs, you will want to make sure the hub is off the trailer. You will want to position the hub with 2 pieces of wood on each side and hammer the studs out from the front to the back, you will not need to heat the hub up. Then you will want to hammer in Wheel Stud, part # 165995 from the back side. Finally, you will want to assemble the hub with the included bearings, races, and seals, and pack the hub with grease.
I have linked a video review of trailer bearing installation and grease packing that you may find as a good reference.
