Cargo Carrier and Cargo Bag for 2017 Subaru Outback with 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Receiver
Question:
I have a 2017 Subaru Outback for which I need to purchase a hitch hauler and cargo carrier/bag to fit inside the hauler. The Outback comes with a 1.25 inch hitch. I have used a hitch hauler with my Expedition for a while, and used a hitch adapter to attach it - not a good idea, as it extends too far back and sagged. What are the best products you recommend?

For your 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon, I'd be happy to recommend a Cargo Bag and Cargo Carrier to hold it. Your hitch receiver will limit our options because I want to make sure we don't overload your vehicle while still giving you the cargo load you desire. You will want to make sure your cargo is within the limits of your hitch receiver including the weight of the carrier, the bag, and the load within the bag.
I would start with recommending the cargo bag because there is a limit to the racks with an 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver that will fit the bag dimensions. I recommend the etrailer Cargo Bag, 9 cubic feet, # e98990. This cargo bag is 40" long x 20" wide x 20" tall. This bag is constructed from premium quality rainproof material with sealed seams. It also includes 6 straps for added attachment security.
For the hitch cargo rack, I recommend the Reese 20x47 Cargo Carrier # 63155 and an compatible light kit # 20174 if your cargo blocks your vehicle lights. The side rails will help with securing the bag and will allow clearance for your hatch when the bag is removed or only partially loaded. It is a lightweight and strong construction that allows 300 lb capacity. However, you will be limited by the tongue weight of your vehicle. This carrier weighs 44 pounds, so subtract that from your allowable tongue weight to determine how much cargo you can add.
