Parts Needed to Add 7-Way Socket and Trailer Brake Controller to 2002 Dodge 3500 Van

Question:

My van has a factory 5 way plug all lights, parking, turn, backup and ground. I ordered the 7way and flat plug kit 20135 I think, thinking the pins would line up, they dont, so it wont work on my van at all. Is there a 7 way plug that will use this factory 5way plug with a pig tail for brakes and 12v? Or will I have to cut away the factory plug and hard wire everything?

Expert Reply:

Tekonsha Multi-Plug T-One Connector Assembly # 20135 is intended for vans that came from the factory with a 7-way already installed. Vehicles so equipped will have a rectangular OEM plug to match the one on this item. It sounds like your van has been equipped with an aftermarket or dealer-installed 5-pole wiring harness.

What you really need is our Brake Controller Installation Kit # ETBC7 which includes a 7-way socket for the van, as well as every other part you'll need to wire that to give you all lighting signals as well as trailer brake power from a controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885. Your existing 5-pole plug will connect to the included 7-way and you'll then need to make only the extra circuit connections for the reverse light wire, 12V auxiliary trailer power and brakes. An installation video and article are linked for you.
