Recommended Brake Controller And Plug In Harness For 2016 GMC Sierra 1500
Question:
with the tekonsha do I need anything else to make my trailer brakes work properly?

On your 2016 Sierra you should have the factory tow package which would include a 7-way trailer connector at the back of your truck so the installation is simple.
I recommend the P2 brake controller, part # 90885 which is a proportional brake controller which applies the trailer brakes with the same intensity as the brakes in your truck. This is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to install and operate.
You will also need the plug and play wiring harness, part # 3016. One end plugs into your Tekonsha Brake controller and the other end plugs into the port under your dash to the left of the steering column right above the carpeting. I have attached an installation video you can check out. The vehicle is different than yours but the installation would be the same.
