Heavy-Duty Tow Package for a 2009 Chevrolet Express 1500

Question:

I have a 2009 chevy express 1500 AWD. i cannot find any distinction in the wiring differences between the 2wd vs AWD are they the same? i am looking to put the curt class 4 hitch on, and i will need a 7 pin iring with trailer brake controler. i have the prodigy p2 that i had previously installed in a 2006 silverado. what do i need to do to get the right wiring and trailer brake hooked up. the van does not have a factor tow hitch or wiring. thanks

There will be no wiring differences between the 2WD and AWD models of the 2009 Chevrolet Express 1500 in regards to trailer or brake control wiring.

The Curt Class IV Trailer Hitch, # 14090, is an excellent choice for your van. We have an installation video of this hitch on a 2008 model that I attached for you if you plan to complete the installation yourself. The installation will be the same on your Express.

For trailer wiring, you will need the following kits:

Tow Ready T-One Wiring Harness - # 118392
Universal 4-Way to 7-Way Installation Kit - # ETBC7

I recommend the Tow Ready T-One Harness because it avoids cutting and splicing by simply plugging into your tail light assemblies to provide the tail light functions.

I recommend our Universal 4-Way to 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7 because there are no plug-in style 7-way options for your van, so this will be the next best option to install a fully functional 7-way trailer connector and brake controller. This kit comes with everything you need to install your Prodigy P2, # 90885.

If you need a new mount and wiring harness for the brake controller, you will want part # 7686 and # 7894.

Next, if you have not considered a ball mount yet, I strongly recommend looking at the Weigh Safe Adjustable Ball Mount, # WS4-25. This is a Class IV and V rated aluminum ball mount with stainless steel balls, 2" and 2-5/16", and a built in tongue weight scale. The last item I recommend for a complete tow package setup is a transmission cooler. This is not necessary to tow, but if you plan on pushing your van's towing capacity (4,400 lbs to 6,700 lbs depending on how it is equipped), then I strongly recommend adding one to prolong the life and performance of your transmission. I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler, # D13504, along with the GM Radiator Adapter Fitting, # D13018. I have attached a transmission cooler installation video as well.
