Do You Add the Weight of a Weight Distribution System when Finding the Tongue Weight of a Trailer

Question:

How much does the EQ37100 add to the tongue weight? Does the weight of the equalizer hitch need to be added to the tongue weight when sizing the hitch? I have a 20foot Airstream with the axle ~13foot from the hitch ball. The unloaded weight of the trailer is 4450 lb, max loaded 5000 lb. The unloaded tongue weight without the hitch installed is 630 lb. The listed shipping weight of the equalizer hitch is 109 lbs.

You do not factor in the weight of the weight distribution system when determining the tongue weight of a trailer to choose a weight distribution system. To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Based on the weights you have included the tongue weight of the trailer is a little over 14 percent of the gross trailer weight. If loaded to 5,000 pounds total weight that would make the tongue weight of the trailer alone around 710 pounds.

Equal-I-zer system # EQ37100ET is rated for 600 to 1,000 pounds tongue weight so assuming that you do not go over 1,000 pounds tongue weight this is an excellent system for your trailer. The system comes with everything, including a ball, but I do recommend a special thin-walled socket, # EQ70-00-4800, to install or remove the ball.
