The Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT will work to provide a 4-Way flat trailer connector on your 2016 Volkswagen Golf R. This wiring harness will allow you to install trailer wiring without needing to splice a connector into your vehicle's factory wiring system.
The powered converter needs to be run to the vehicle's positive battery post. I cannot recommend that you connect the power wire to a 12V accessory wire somewhere further back on the vehicle. With the powered converter, the trailer's lights will be powered by the vehicle's lighting and will not put any draw on your vehicle's wiring system. Connecting the converter to the battery also keeps the install from splicing into any of the vehicle wiring on your Golf R. The wire needed to make the connection at the battery under the hood is included with the # 119250KIT.
I've attached an installation video of this harness on a similar vehicle for you to have an idea of the installation process.
