Speed Rating and Air Pressure Maximum for Kenda 4.80-12 Trailer Tires

Question:

Im converting a single haul wave runner trailer to transport my kayaks. It has dry rotted 4.80x12 tires mounted 5 on 4.5 steel rims now and will be replacing them with 4.80x12 Kendra 6-ply C rated tires. The trailer weighs 210lbs, total weight of all of the loaded kayaks and gear will be approximately 225lbs. The trailer is rated to carry 1000lbs. I plan on removing some of the leaf springs so the trailer will bounce on the suspension and not the tires. So to my question, can I drive safely at 70 mph at the recommend psi or should I over inflate a little but not over maximum psi?

Expert Reply:

First, Kenda tires are rated for 65 miles per hour. Exceeding that speed for an extended period of time will generate excessive heat and can lead to failure. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall compared to passenger vehicle tires and if under inflated the thicker sidewall will generate excessive heat.
