The 2011 Subaru Outback is not equipped with an under-dash connector for installing a brake controller, but a controller can still be installed using our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7 if a 7-way trailer connector is needed, or # ETBC6 for a 6-way connector.
The install process, although a bit involved, is pretty straightforward and can be completed by the average do-it-yourselfer. We have plenty of help available online through the website, through our experts, or by phone.
Other than the appropriate install kit, you will also need a brake controller and a functional wiring harness with a 4-pole trailer connector.
For a brake controller, I can highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This proportional-style controller is our best seller, and offers safe and predictable braking action.
There are two different wiring harnesses available. For the Outback Sport Model, use part # C56111. If you do not have the Sport Model, use part # C56040.
I will provide links to the products mentioned above, as well as install details for the brake controller install kit and the two different wiring harnesses. I will also link you to a video showing a typical brake controller installation using the install kit. The video shows a controller being installed on a different vehicle, but the video would give you a very good outline of the install process.
