Parts Needed to Add a Prodigy RF Brake Controller to a European Trailer and Vehicle

Question:

Hi Mike i am from the UK,can rf TK94FR be hard wired to a UK tractor unit just to operate electric brakes. The running lights, turn signals, and brake lights are already hardwired via a curly susie heavy cable from tractor to a 1990 Dutchmen 30 ft 5th wheel.Tractor basic wiring no factory towing plug.UK/EU laws say electric brake controllers must be fitted to trailer not tow vehicle. The trailer rear turn signal, and brake lights, are separate lights not combined like US ones. Can you advise me what to buy from you to make rf TK94FR work brakes only.

You would have to install a separate US style 7-Way trailer connector such as # HM47210 on your tow vehicle for the RF to plug into. In this connector only the 12 volt circuit and the brake light circuits need to be active. For the 12 volt circuit (black wire) you can run a wire such as # 12-1-1 sold by the foot from the new 7-Way 12 volt wire up to the vehicle battery via a 40 amp circuit breaker such as # PK54540.

For the brake light circuits you can tap into the connector you are using now. On a US 7-Way the brake light signals are at the pins in the 3 and 9 o'clock positions (red wire for left, brown wire for right).

The trailer will also have to have a separate 7-Way such as # H20042 to plug into the back of the RF but it would just need to have the brake output wire (blue) going to the electric trailer brakes.

This is the first time I have heard that a brake controller has to be on the trailer. Are you sure you aren't thinking of a breakaway system that would have to be mounted on the trailer and that would activate the brakes if the trailer became detached from the tow vehicle?

If you are thinking of a breakaway system we have several options, see link, such as # 50-85-315 which also includes an integrated charger. I have included a link to our help article on breakaway systems as well.
