Can a Bike Rack that Fits a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch be Used with a 2016 Honda Civic

Question:

I have a 2016 civic touring also, but I already have an existing 2inch bike rack with me. I dont want to end up buying another bike rack that fits the 1 1/4 inch hitch. Is it possible to get a hitch product that will accommodate my 2inch hitch? I only plan on installing accessories on it but no towing. Also if there is such a product, will it require cutting into any panel of my vehicle? Thank you.

All of the trailer hitches for the 2016 Honda Civic are going to be Class I hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. In order to use your 2 inch bike rack you would have to use an adapter, # HTAD. However, doing so will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent meaning the combined weight of the bike rack and bikes cannot exceed the reduced capacity.

There are a couple of hitches that fit your Civic; Curt hitch # C11604, and the Curt hitch # C92UR. They install differently with the Curt # C11604 hitch bolting to the bottom of the frame and the Curt # C92UR installing at the bumper mounts. This means that the # C11604 hitch will be mostly visible and the # C92UR hitch will be mostly hidden with only the receiver showing. You can check out the instruction links and the install videos for more information. Both are rated for 200 pounds tongue weight but by using the HTAD adapter that capacity is cut to 100 pounds.

Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. And if you go with the # C11604 hitch Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements. They do not require the stabilization strap on the Curt # C92UR.
