The Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Ball Mount for 2 Inch Hitches # AMSC6 that you referenced can be used with a surge coupler for hydraulic brakes, but you may notice a difference in how the trailer tows. We have had customers write reviews on both sides of the issue. Some have had no problems while others noticed it affected the braking of their trailer.

I spoke with my technical contact at Convert-A-Ball about their cushioned ball mounts, and he said they do not have a stance one way or the other. They have also heard mixed reviews back from their customers about success using the ball mount with a surge coupler. He commented that he thinks it will depend on the working condition of your surge coupler. If the coupler is in good working order with no rust, the cushioned ball mount will not effect the braking near as much as a coupler that has rust and other factors that affect how it functions.

Most people who have noticed an effect on their trailer's braking notice it when they go to take off from a stop. The coupler absorbs the release before the coupler, causing the brakes on the trailer to not release before the vehicle begins moving. This can cause the trailer to drag as you try to take off from a stop.

If you are concerned about how the ball mount will affect the performance of your trailer, I recommend using a fixed ball mount with your surge coupler. The # AMSC6 ball mount has a 4-3/4 inch rise and 6 inch drop.

The most popular comparable ball mount with a similar rise and drop is the Curt Ball Mount for 2 Inch Hitches, 4 Inch Rise and 6 Inch Drop # C45070.

I've attached review videos of both of these fixed ball mounts, and I have linked a page with all of our comparable ball mounts for you.
