Trailer Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier and Trailer Hitch for a 2012 Toyota Camry
Question:
Putting a hitch receiver Class 2 Hitch Round Tube, Max weight: 3,500 lbs, Model 36915 on my Toyota Camry. I have a cargo hauler that has a max weight of 750IBS I would like to get the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4inch to 2inch Trailer Hitch Receiver with 5inch Rise Brophy Hitch Accessories. This will take the load amount for the cargo hauler to 100 Ibs only? If I get a horizontal adapter, it says it can still do 3,500 Ibs. So with this adapter rise, thats all the wight I can carry is 100?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Any adapter you use in a hitch, whether it has a rise or drop or is straight, will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent.
The hitch number that you have provided does not come up. The Draw-Tite Class II hitch for your 2012 Toyota Camry is # 36540 rated for 300 pounds tongue weight. The use of an extender or adapter will reduce that to 150 pounds.
For a hitch mounted carrier you are better off using one that is designed for a Class II, 1-1/4 inch receiver and something that is light weight to maximize the amount of cargo you can put on it. Curt carrier # C18110 is compatible, weighs just 30 pounds, and has a rise in the shank for better ground clearance. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you.
