1996 Toyota Tacoma V6 High Capacity Trailer Hitch Recommendation

Question:

Hi I have a 1996 Tacoma V6 4x4 and I read that its max towing capacity is roughly 8000 pounds. I have big tex trailer that weight around 2000 pounds and I want to haul cars on which in average weigh from 2800 to 2800 pounds. Technically my truck can handle it but my question is my hitch is only rated for 5000 pounds. What does that mean the max I can tow is 5000 pounds, I have tried to find a hitch that exceeds that but no luck. Any advice on what should I do.

The highest rated trailer hitch we offer for the 1996 Toyota Tacoma is the Curt hitch part # 13013 which has a 5k capacity when not used with a weight distribution system but with a WD system it has a 6k capacity.

If you are unfamiliar with WD system you would need to check out the help article I attached that covers what they are and how they work.

For a system that would work great with your trailer loaded you would want the part # RP66083 that has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs and features the only sway control on the market designed to stop sway before it starts.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
