Will 2016 Ram 1500 Need to Be Flashed By Dealer After Installing Aftermarket Brake Controller

Question:

Just got a P3 brake control from you . Got specific harness also plugged in and dont currently have trailer to hook it to 100 mi away and new travel trailer electric brakes unit currently stays lit .? Went on dodge forums and it was stated that if you installed a factory unit you need to take it to dealer to get it flashed do I need to do this with my P3 tenshoika unit ? Or can I finish set up when I pick up trailer?

After installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 and Custom Wiring Harness # 3024-P on your 2016 Ram 1500, you will not need to take your truck to the dealer to have it flashed. The reason to take it to the dealer to get flashed is if you had to uninstall a factory integrated brake controller to install the aftermarket controller, like the P3.

It is normal for the brake controller to stay on for 15 minutes or so after the truck has been started, even if no trailer is connected. Once the P3 hasn't sensed a trailer for approximately 15 minutes, it will go into a sleep mode and the screen will shut down.

Before you leave home to pick up your trailer, it is a good idea to ensure that all of the functions are working properly at the 7-Way trailer connector. This will help reduce the risk of any unpleasant surprises when you reach your destination and connect the trailer to the truck. I recommend using a trailer connector tester like # C73NR. This will test for function of the reverse light circuit, right turn/brake, taillights, left turn/brake, brake controller output, and the 12V power feed. I have attached a review video of this tester for you.
