Recommended Weight Distribution System for Rpod 179 Travel Trailer
Question:
Hi, I would like some recommendations on a weight distribution hitch. I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel with a towing capacity of 7200 lbs and am towing an Rpod 179 that has a GVW of 3800 lbs and 350 lb tongue weight. The vehicle tows the camper just fine but I have been told that a WDH will improve ride quality and safety. I would prefer a WDH with sway control and a system without chains. What would you recommend? Thanks

To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the cargo area of your Grand Cherokee behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures represent the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose.
I'd agree that you should indeed go with a weight distribution system with an integrated sway control component. The sides of a travel trailer tend to act like a sail, catching crosswinds and turbulence caused by passing and oncoming traffic.
Since you don't care for the chain suspended spring bars, I'd recommend the Equa-l-izer weight distribution system, part # EQ37060ET. This system is compatible with trailer tongue weights ranging from 300-600 lbs and should work excellently for your Rpod 179. The system includes the weight distributing shank and a 2 inch trailer ball.
I've also linked you to an FAQ article that provides a more in-detail description of how weight distribution works.
