Can Air Pressure of a Trail Air Pin Box be Lowered to Level Fifth Wheel Trailer

Question:

I purchased a # LC328492 from you a couple of months back. It is used on a 2012 Keystone Outback Sydney 331 that has a dry weight of around 11K pounds. I think it is rated at a pin weight of 1700 pounds. Since this pinbox is rated for up to an 18K pound trailer and I am less than that by quite a bit, I am wondering if I have to put in as much air in the bag as suggested and the pinbox still function properly. Why I ask if I can put in less air is that the more air I put in, the more the front of the camper is picked up and with my camper, when the arrows are aligned, my camper is sitting a little nose up. I have moved the pinbox up as high as I can with the mounting holes so I have no option to move it up more for a more level ride when the arrows are aligned as suggested. I am thinking that I may not have to put as much air in the bag since the camper is not as heavy as the capacity of the pinbox. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, Walter Kraus

Ideally you would lower the head of your fifth wheel hitch to bring down the nose of the trailer so that it sits level. You really want to keep the proper amount of air pressure in the Flex Air part # LC328492 that you referenced and it is not designed for air pressure to be a leveling device.

As long as you keep at least 6 inches between the bed rails of your truck and the trailer overhang lowering the head of your fifth wheel hitch would be the best solution. Most heads have around 4 inches of adjustability. They will lower with the bolts that attach the head to the legs of the hitch.
