Choosing Weight Distribution System for 8-Inch-Tall Trailer Frame

Question:

Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW. Is there a trailer frame mount with this hitch that will fit an 8inch trailer tongue frame ? Specs indicate only 6inch frame height. Thanks

The standard spring bar brackets in the Equal-i-zer 4-Point Weight Distribution Systems # EQ37140ET and # EQ37120ET will fit trailer frames up to 6-inches in height as you noted. There is no alternate part or adapter to allow these systems to be fitted on an 8-inch-tall trailer frame.

For a tall trailer frame like yours the best weight distribution/sway prevention systems will be those that use bolt-on brackets and round bars that will provide better turning clearance at the nose of the trailer frame. Reese offers bolt-on lift bracket kit # RP58305; these bolt directly to the sides of your trailer frame and can be used with a Reese round bar weight distribution system.

You will want to choose your system based on your trailer's actual fully-loaded tongue weight plus the weight of anything in the vehicle that sits behind the rear axle, such as a generator or loaded cooler. This total TW figure will allow you to select a system that is stiff enough to let it shift some weight forward to your front axle but without causing weird handling from the trailer. Ideally your total TW figure will fall in the middle of the system's operating range.
