Recommended Clearance Between Truck Bumper and Fifth Wheel/Gooseneck Trailer

Question:

Hello I have a 2007 F-450 with a 12x8foot flatbed. I am looking for a 5th wheel hitch used for a RV. I know generally the hitch should be placed directly over the axle. I am worried that I will have 2 much bed behind the hitch. What is the maximum bed length from the hitch to the rear of the bed for RV applications? Can I move the hitch aft of the axle since this truck has a heavy duty suspension? Thanks

It is generally recommended that you have at least 2 feet between the rear bumper of the truck and the fifth wheel trailer so that you have clearance around corners.

I can't recommend you move the fifth wheel hitch behind the axle center as that will unload the front suspension slightly which will affect braking and turning in emergency situations.

For a flat bed fifth wheel hitch the Demco Hijacker SL part # DM6076SL-FLAT would be a great options since it is designed for flat bed configurations.

For rails you will need the # DM6012. The install of these rails will have to be a custom install done by a qualified fabricator in your area. The rails will need to mount to the frame of your truck and not just to the bed.
