Will Using a Load Range C Trailer Tire Provide a Better Ride than a Load Range D in the Same Size

Question:

Is a trailer tire at 50 PSI better than at 65 PSI ? Is the load range c going to ride / handle better than the load range d.

Expert Reply:

If you are talking about the same tire you would want to keep it inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. With less air pressure the capacity will decrease. Also, when under inflated a trailer tire will build up excessive heat and that can lead to tire failure. So if the tire is rated for 65psi you will want to keep 65psi in it.

If the trailer requires load range C tires and you put a load range D on it instead you might notice a stiffer ride because the load range D has a higher ply rating than a C of the same tire size.

You will want tires that, when inflated to the max psi, meet or only slightly exceed the gross trailer weight rating for the best overall performance. I have included a link to our help article on trailer tires for you.
