Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma
Question:
My tacoma came with a 10x3inch transmission cooler. Is it a plate and fin type? I have noticed while pulling my 4500lbs trailer that the trans temp has reached as high as 210 degrees measured at the coverter and 200 degree measured at the pan by my scan gauge on a 100 degree day. I would like to put a 11x11inch cooler on it. Should I get a plate and fin or stacked plate. Ive read where the stacked plate sends air bubbles to the pump. What is your expert opinion. Which one should I get

Expert Reply:
You definitely should get a supplemental transmission cooler as your fluid is getting hot enough while towing that cooling it down will help prolong the life of the transmission.
Stacked plate coolers are the most efficient design so I would recommend you go with something like the part # D13403. This is a 13" wide x 7-5/16" tall x 2" deep cooler that would do an excellent job keeping your fluid temperature down. Bubbles don't just appear out of nowhere in transmission fluid so this cooler would not cause your fluid to get bubbles or frothy.
