Availability of Over/Under Leaf Spring Conversion Kit for 2015 Forest River Clipper Travel Trailer
Question:
I have a 2015 Forest River Clipper with a single LCI 3500lbs axle that came with 185/80R13 load range D tires that are in my opinion right at the limit of their capacity with the trailer empty and not that easy to find should trouble happen on the road. I want to up grade to a more readily available 14inch tire but the trailer has less than 1inch of clearance with a 14inch tire. Is there a kit or is one even necessary to change the trailer to a spring over configuration and will it give enough clearance to use the larger tires?

Expert Reply:
A 3500 lb axle will typically be 2-3/8 inches in diameter. If that's the case with your axle, you'd want to use the # K71-384-00 Over/Under conversion kit you referenced. This will allow you to swap the spring pack from under the axle to above the axle. The kit includes new spring seats, which will need to be tacked into place. This kit will lift your trailer by the diameter of the axle, providing a bit more clearance for you.
Keep in mind that raising the ride height of your TT can make it more top-heavy, which can change its towing characteristics.
