Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Having wrestled with chains for going over passes growing up in Montana, these are like "night and day" getting them on and off a vehicle!! No loose chain link ends to beat up your fenders, don't have to roll the tires to fasten them up, and self tighten on their own. Work great!!

Fantastic, would buy again. Pulled out a couple jeeps with big tires. Sometimes the only thing that'll get you moving are snow chains

2012 Honda CR-V

Quick shipping and great comms from etrailer. Practicing installing at home payed off in the wild. I was literally in and out of “pit lane” in 5 minutes! The chains were pretty quiet and performed well in 25 degree, snowy, icy conditions. Great engineering and solidly made.

by:

Finally got to use these chains after owning them for 12 months. They were fairly easy to use and made a huge difference when driving down a snow-covered dirt road. Without out them we would have been stranded. Being self-tensioning made fitting really easy. Worth the money.

Yes we like our chains. Although our Van was rear ended and so we have been renting a van for a few months! Had to use the chains on our rental.

Great Quality. Quick Installation and very easy to take off. Self-tensioning worked like a charm. I would definitely recommend them.

I bought these to use on my 2023 Rav4 TRD Off-Road OEM Falken AT Tires.

I highly recommend installing them at home a few times before heading up. Watching the etrailer videos on YouTube was also a huge help.

Good quality chains comes in a nice plastic storage box
Easy to put on I did a test run

by:

Previously my only experience with chains was using cable chains on front wheel drive cars, where turning the wheels was necessary to ensure they had a good fit.

I bought these chains for my 2023 Kia EV6 with stock 235/55/19 tires. The instruction manual for the car says to put chains on the rear wheels and I was worried that getting chains on the rear wheels would be difficult. Despite never having used this style of chains before I was easily able to test-fit both chains with 15 minutes, and the chains fit very snuggly and didn't move when I move the car a cars length. Getting the inner loop positioned right is something that took a couple tries to get right, and I'm sure there might be a bit more room for improvement :)

I was slightly concerned about the chains damaging the rims or other parts of the car, but with the included spacers (not applied in the picture) I think this won't be a problem.

I'm taking the car up to the snow this weekend and if I use the chains I'll provide an update.

etrailer did a great job clearly communicating to me when my chains would arrive with no fuss.

I was looking to have snow tire chains for my upcoming trip to northern Wisconsin. I found these to be very easy to install as the instructions were very clear. I like that they come with a case to make them easy to store in my Ford Escape.

by:

Used them extensively in 12-15 inch snow on a BMW X5 and they were absolutely great. Easy to place. Effective at delivering superb traction and always stayed in place on the tire.

by:

I hesitate a bit to leave this review, because it's based on very limited experience. I recently moved into the Smoky Mountain foothills, don't have a 4X4, and last winter a couple times was stuck not being able to make it up my steep, narrow driveway after a snow. So, I purchased these tire chains. I did a couple dry-run installs/removals and was very pleased with the ease of installation, the self-adjusters worked great, etc. However, I've never actually had to drive in the snow with the chains installed, so, as I said, my rating is based on limited product experience, so anyone reading this, please take that into consideration.

by:

These tire chains have been wonderful. They are easy to put on and even easier to take off. I use them on a very icy steep gravel driveway (more than a half mile in length). They provide excellent traction and break up the ice so I can use my other vehicles on the driveway. I like these so much that I purchased them for two other vehicles.

by:

Bought these to go with our 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. We're often in Utah during the Winter and have already put them to use. They were so easy to put on all by myself. Great design and gave us all the traction we needed to climb a snowy steep mountainside.

by:

I have a 2019 Honda CRV and have never owned tire chains before so I dont have anything to compare these to but they are easy to put on and take off and they conquer a steep icy unpaved drive way in The Catskills perfectly. There are some plastic parts that probably should be metal. One of them - the tension hook - broke on one of my chains (see photo) and when I reported this to etrailer.com with a photo to prove it, they sent another set. So I am pleased overall with the service from etrailer.com but am only giving 4 stars for the product on account of the breakage. Also they rusted after one season but that hasn't impacted performance.

by:

I purchase the chains for when I go to Colorado. Driving thru Wyoming they required chains when going over some of the mountains passes. I like the how easy they are to put on and take off.

by:

Konig are the BEST chains you can buy (in my not-so-humble opinion) - and the Customer Service by etrailer is as good as it gets... THANK YOU Quinn !

by:

I live in Texas, so these were totally new to me. I didn't know the first thing about snow chains. I did my research and decided I wanted the easiest type to put on and take off. I also wanted some heavy duty ones as I didn't want them falling apart if I needed them in my first trip to Colorado. When they came in, I practiced putting them on and taking them off. This was so simple to do that I was confident of my being able to do that. They were also heavy duty. I'm glad I got these.

by:

I love this chains, there ridiculously easy to install compared to other chains and cables. Once there on they are on and you don't have to worry about anything loosening and flying off while your driving. I live in Oregon we get snow quite often and it's nice to be able to just throw these on and forget about the icy roads

by:

II am very happy with the tire chains. NotI only are they quality but they are also relatively easy to install. A couple of years ago I Purchased a snowblower because I was tired of shoveling my driveway. As life would have it we didn’t get any significant snows for two years. So I really didn’t get a chance to use my snowblower. Nothing wrong with that. The same is true of the tire chains. We have a getaway home that is in the snowbelt. I bought the chains in the event that we would be at the get away and get snowed in. As of yet I have not needed to use the chains .Again like the snowblower I’m not sorry that I purchased the chains. If it means that I don’t ever have to use them that’s OK with me.

by:

Based on installation, five stars. They can be passed between the gap on dual rear wheels, although it is tricky. Have not used them in a snow/ice situation yet and hopefully will never have to do so with my Winnebago View 24D.

by:

Outstanding service! With an upcoming trip and recent snow storm etrailer helped me get my snow chains just in time for our vacation. Without the chains I would have been screwed. Communication with this company is impressive. The original chains I ordered would not have arrived in time and the sales team called me right away to find alternative solutions. Chains for 315/35/20 size tires are not easy to find. Really happy with my purchase. Thank you.

When the fitguide has your 2012 Nissan Rogue listed as a confirmed fit for your 215/70-16 tires, that means that we have successfully fitted them onto your vehicle with that specific tire size. I double-checked the owner's manual for your 2011 Toyota RAV4, and you are correct in saying that the manual does not mention Class S requirements for tire chains/cables. However, Class S chains are generally a great idea because they are made for vehicles with limited wheel well clearance. Chains also gives you more overall traction than cables.
