How to Determine if a Vehicle has a Class I or Class II Trailer Hitch

Question:

Im looking at purchasing this stabilizer# 83660 for my Tear Drop camper...has a terrible sway over 50mph. It says you need a ball mount accessory to place the ball on the hitch and says its for a class two hitch? How do I tell if its class one or two? The hitch is inch and a quarter!

If your 1-1/4 inch hitch is on a 2008 Chevy HHR then it is a Class I hitch. You can identify a Class I based on the tongue weight and gross trailer weight capacities. A Class I hitch will top out at 200 pounds tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight capacity.

There is no sway control option if the tow vehicle has a Class I trailer hitch. The best defense against sway is proper loading of the trailer. Its a little more difficult on a travel trailer but if things are loaded in it try to distribute the weight evenly.

Should you experience a sway event slow down. Going faster can make it worse! Tear Drop trailers tend to be very light which makes them more susceptible to sway. Weighing it down some (within its and the tow vehicle's capabilities) can help.
