Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2013 Ford F-150 5-1/2 Foot Bed
Question:
I have a 2013 Ford f-150 4x4 5.0 litre 5 1/2 ft bed crew cab full front and back seat. I want to purchase a 5th wheel 30 ft 8000 lbs. The dealer want us to purchase a tripod hitch but I am very skeptical that it would be the safest way for us. I have never seen a tripod hitch. We are seniors and want to be safe on the road. What kind of hitch would be best for our truck to be able to make turns we were told also that the sides of the bed were higher than other trucks. What hitch would you recommend for us.

For your 2013 Ford F-150 with 5-1/2 foot bed, I recommend the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30928 with Quick-install Custom Base Rails and Outboard Installation Kit # RP56006-53. The M5 features a wide funnel area and a 4-way pivoting head to help ease hookup, even on ground that isn't level. Providing a secure king pin connection, the single-piece jaw is designed to offer superior jaw-to-kingpin contact, produce minimum rattle, and self-latch when the kingpin is in place. This 5th wheel hitch has a weight capacity of 20,000 pounds.
Since your truck bed is less than 6 feet long, this hitch requires use of a sidewinder king pin to allow you to make sharp turns safely. A sidewinder replaces a specific OEM king pin box. If you can tell me the manufacturer and model number of the king pin that is on the trailer, I will be happy to make a recommendation for a sidewinder for you. I have attached a help article on sidewinders for you.
