Why Ignition Key Is Left In Accessory Mode When Flat-Towing 2015 Ford Explorer
Question:
I am flat towing a 2015 Ford Explorer AWD with adaptive cruise. The manual states to place the ignition in accessory mode. The first two times that I did this my battery was dead after several hours. I then installed a lead from my coach to the explorer battery to keep it charged. This works great but I have now noticed that the odometer is logging the miles while towed. What is the purpose for placing the ignition in accessory?

The vehicle has to be placed in the accessory mode because if the key was locked it would not allow the steering to move as needed when flat towing the vehicle.
Per the owner's manual it states that the vehicle should be started every 6 hours to maintain a battery charge. As far as the odometer, since all four wheels are on the ground, the odometer registers the miles traveled. I am not aware of any way that can be avoided.
