Replacement Hubs and Brake Assemblies for Dexter Mobile Home Axle and 8-147 Hubs

Question:

Greetings, I have a 1975 FLEM Fleetwing mobile home that was stripped down to the frame and then converted into an enclosed car trailer. I have the title which says Model Line - TL and Body Type - TV. Its a tandem wheel assembly with axles. After pulling the wheels I can see that it has Dexter 4 lug hubs Model number 8-147. The axle is 2 3/8 in diameter and appears to me to have a 4 from the center of the bearing cover to the center of the axle itself. I believe that they are 10 drums since the center to center horizontal measurement from where the lugs are is about 9 1/2 and the center to center diagonally appears to be about 6 3/4. For the life of me, I cant find a any markings on the axle tube itself and so Im trying to figure out which axles I have so that I can order new drums and brakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best regards

Based on the information you gave, although I can't help with the axle (other than to state it is a 3,500 lbs axle). Dexter mobile home axles were designed for one time use and weren't really documented for replacement parts, but because you have the hub number I can still give you the info you need for new drums and brakes.

Your current Dexter hub 8-147 I was able to look up and it has an inner bearing # LM48548, an outer bearing # L44649, and a grease seal # 58846. Based on this information we have 5 lug options available but not any of the 4 lug options. I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # AKHD-545-35-K. There are no longer 4 lug hubs available for 3,500 lb axles from Dexter so if you need that bolt pattern, I recommend keeping your hubs and just getting new bearings and seal for each hub.

For your replacement brake assemblies, I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA. These will work with your current hubs or the new 5 lug hubs.
