Lug Nuts Backed Out and Caused Trailer Tires to Come Off
Question:
Hello, I purchased 4 of these tires and rim Combo. On Saturday night coming home from the boat ramp, we lost the two left side tires on the trailer at the same time going approximately 50 miles an hour. The lugs nuts AM90054 backed out completely on both tires and the trailer ped on its hubs, all the studs where still on the hub. The other side was fine and the lug nuts did not back off. I have been a mechanic for over 35 years and I know I tighten all the lug nuts on all the wheels. No body was hurt or anything, I just want to make sure this is not going to continue with the other side or with the new ones I am about to order again today. I am concern that the wheels lugs AM90054 are not deep enough for the wheel studs that come with my hubs and that they will not bottom out. These AM90054 are closed end nuts and the ones I was using with my old galvanized wheel rims are regular nuts. Is it possible the studs on the hubs might be too long and your AM90054 are not tightening the new aluminum wheel fully to the hub.? This is a very dangerous situation and I want to make sure this does not happen to me again. Do I need to purchase a hub from you that has to match your Aluminum Wheels AM32001HWTB to avoid the problem or do I have another issue? At this point I need new hubs anyway because I believe these hubs have been compromised and I do not want to reuse them. I do not believe my axles are bent I have not yet removed the hubs to check but they seem to be OK. The axles are also brand new, I installed them at the same time as your wheels. The hubs are also new HK86 - Hub Kit 1-1/16 x 1-3/8 5 lug from OUTCAST WATERSPORTS. INC., also the axles are new WH84TRK- AXVinch 2x2 84 TRK W/ 1-1/16 x 1-3/8 spindle. Everything mounted perfect all was great and on my first trip out coming back we ran into this. Please advise ASAP as I am about to reorder 2 more of the AM32001HWTB along with the same AM90054 and the caps AM90175. I appreciate you help and advice.

That is certainly a scary situation! If the studs on the hubs are long enough then it is possible they are not getting tight enough but if that was the case you should notice at least some play between the wheels and lug nuts or hub surface. We do have longer 1/2 inch lug nuts, # 12CLN-L, which are 1-3/4 inches deep (1/4 inch longer than # AM26NR). If stud length is the issue then the deeper lug nuts would be the way to go.
You do not have to purchase a special hub to use the wheels. I recommend having the trailer inspected by a shop that works on trailers to ensure there isn't any unseen damage to the running gear.
