Sway Control Recommendation for Curt Weight Distribution System on 2014 Dodge Durango Towing Camper

Question:

We just had a CURT 1,000 lb Weight distribution hitch put on our 2014 Dodge Durango. Now I want to add sway control and not sure which one to buy. Looking at the Reese friction sway bar. We have a Flagstaff Shamrock 17 hybrid - 17 feet when closed. Any suggestions about which to buy? Also, Ive seen that you should unlatch the sway control when backing up . . . but what does that mean when in traffic you can still make turns right? Seems like a silly question as Im sure you can, but Im not sure why you cant back it up with it on. Thanks for your help.

I recommend taking a look at the Curt Friction Sway Control, # 17200. This friction style sway control is going to reduce the side-to-side movement of your trailer caused by wind, curvy roads, passing traffic, etc.

With any weight distribution system it is a good idea to remove the spring bars and sway control anytime you encounter a tight maneuvering situation (which happens more often when backing up a trailer) to avoid damage to the system. For normal forward travel, including regular turns, and moderately straight backing up, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Disconnecting the sway control system before backing up will also make it easier since the vehicle doesn't have to fight the friction sway system.
